A Song for Running, A Story for Big Finish

"Thunder called its warning..."

2019 has not been the best year for me personally, with the loss of my mother still so heavy, it's hard to think about the positives.

But something magical happened to me this year. I was contacted about doing a subscriber short trip, as a new writer for Big Finish Productions, creating a story for one of my favourite Doctors.

After pitching the idea, a story set in a period of history I was already familliar with, which was approved I then wrote 5,000 words and created something I hoped entertain the subscribers. What was amazing was spending time at
Ladbroke Audio where I was given such a warm welcome and the wonderful Stephen Critchlow was a pleasure to have him record my story.

Listening to someone else read something I had written, and then knowing others would get the chance to listen to has been the proudest moment of the year. Big Finish have been amazing to work for and I hope that it won't be the last time.

Today it's out for the subscribing world to listen to. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

A Song for Running will be released with a DW Monthly Adventure for Subscribers only, December 2019 along with

I did say that something was coming. Oh it's a coming.

As this is my last charity anthology as an editor, I wanted to focus on what we I love best about the show, and the theme relating to the most recent things going on my life. So I present to you 'A Hand to Hold' A Charity Anthology about the biggest family in the universe....

A sneakpeak and the details for the guidelines for writers below.
Artists, keep on the look out before the end of the year!

Entry Date for Story Pitches: November 23rd 2019 12am GMT.

Email your pitch in a word document with the title ‘A Hand To Hold’ Submission and your name to ahandtoholdfanzine@gmail.com
"There is no bigger family in the universe than the one the Doctor created.

This is a charity anthology to celebrate the characters and relationships we’ve come to love during the show’s 56 year run. From the First Doctor and his treasured Susan, to the Doctor being a father figure to Ace, to Sarah Jane tinkering around Bannerman Road with Luke and Sky, they’re all so important to us. For A Hand to Hold, we’re looking for stories with heart, and family at its center, even if it’s the family the Doctor has given us along the way.:

Proceeds from the anthology will go to Mount Edgecumbe Hospice in Cornwall, where my mother was recently a patient. Their outstanding work is funded only in part by the government and would be great to raise some more money to keep the hospice running smoothly....

Check out the details for the rest of the guidelines....

Sockhops & Seances Release!

This post has been a long time coming and I am very grateful that is now, when I am sat in Cornwall when I've been told the best news...

So guys, It looks like I've become a published author today.

My short story "A Single Wolf, Grey and Gaunt" is one of many of the short stories curated by Nicole Petit from 18thWall Productions.

Here's the description:

Award-Winning curator Nicole Petit presents the ginchiest look into the supernatural world of the 1950s.
Between poodle skirts and white picket fences, there should be only one place to meet a monster: at the local drive-in. Captured by technicolor, these creatures of the night are banished by hanging up the speaker.

But there are other forces at work in the night. The ghost of a wooden roller coaster haunts the theme park that tore it down. Hot-Rodders race a particularly hellish speed demon. An American P.I. in London braves the fog to find a man chasing lights in the sky. A small town boy detective takes on three impossible, eldritch cases. There’s no telling what’s out there, beyond the drive-in’s screen.

Sockhops & Seances features stories by Kara Dennison, Sophie Iles, Jaap Boekestein, Richard Sheppard, James Dorr, Josh Reynolds, Joshua Wanisko, Jackson Kuhl, David M. Heonig, M. Lopes da Silva, and Jon Black.

I started pitching for this story for 18th Wall in February last year, aching to write original fiction.

The only thing I was truly sure about was setting my story in Cornwall. A few weeks earlier I was visiting family in Fowey, before my parents then moved here early this year and i considered what a great setting it would be for a supernatural story. Fowey in particular felt like a great place for a mystery.

Whilst we were on the beach together, laughing and joking my brother was playing fetch with his dog Roxy on Par beach and that image wouldn't leave me head, and even now, was the biggest inspiration for the first scene.

Everything started to click into place after that, and was a joy to write, and re-write with the help of the wonderful editors and curators at 18th Wall.

Whilst I am determined to not reveal any spoilers, if you're into anything regarding old British legends, wise-cracking New Yorkers, deer-hounds, and 1950s television then you'll probably enjoy this story!

Last thing but really not least, my fictional Cornish harbour town was named after my Nan, Mena Trethewey, who passed away four years ago this January coming. I miss her every day.

One Year Twitch Anniversary

5/30/2019

A year ago today my life changed forever.

Why? Today marked the first anniversary of the first night of Doctor Who On Twitch!

Honestly, I had no idea what this would become. I was working in a call center then, I had a few followers but nothing to brag about. I was still very new social media and putting my artwork up.

Who knew I'd have at least 30 followers by the end of that week, just for some simple doodles of my favourite characters and on, to create a charity anthology. On to leave my full time job to write and draw full time.

It's insane that's what it is!

So to celebrate here are a just a few of my favourites from my first three weeks of drawing.
So tell me, what was your favourite artwork inspired by the Twitch Stream?

Moon Man you say? What's that.

Well, it's a new charity anthology inspired by just Peter Capaldi and the roles he's played. The charity is raising money for the Glasgow School of Art, Peter's old school!

But why Peter? Well, why not Peter! Peter Capaldi's roles have stretched over a long career of comedy, drama and dramatic novelizations and the odd animated character or two.

Within the book also isn't just art but a story! Not just any story but a branching narrative! You've heard of play your own adventure books? Yes, a bit like Bandersnatch -- you chose how you navigation through the book.....

...and discover 41 beautiful pieces of art spanning his career along the way.

There's also some other awesome things with this anthology, and what makes it so special.

Not only do we have the choose your own narrative, but you can also get a load of awesome merchandise with this too!

I am totally getting the t-shirt!

So, this was me a year ago.

This was my first ever con stall. I really didn't know what the hell I was doing and I had so much love and support from fellow artists and friends, and support from Colin Baker, one of my favourite doctor who celebrities.

I couldn't tell you how many miles, how many people, how many times I've been astounded by the love and kindness of people I've met. From some of the biggest venues, to the smallest.

Doing these events make every hard day worth it.

Next weekend I do my thirteenth convention! Bedford Charity Who 5, which you can find out more about here

I say, bring it on!

PS:
To celebrate I'm doing a giveaway on my Twitter and Facebook pages. Which you can find more about here:

“Overall: I very much appreciated having a decent, if short, adventure here, with characters that I love, from a period of the Doctor’s life that I love. It was quite a pleasant surprise to find this story, and I recommend it.”

Defending Earth: The Adventures of Sarah Jane Smith

3/17/2019

Picture
Sarah Jane Smith is one of my favourite fictional characters. She's everything you want in a heroine, smart and funny, with soft edges and willing to take on the world to do the right thing
When I had the opportunity to pitch my idea to Mary-Helen, I never thought I would seriously get the chance to do something as special as I have for this anthology. Not only do I get to write Sarah Jane during her adventures on Bannerman Road, I had the chance to explore a 'what it' story that has been on my mind for at least three years. Along side some marvellous writers who I am lucky to class as my friends.
And then they landed me the bombshell and asked me to do all the interior and cover art work. I couldn't have been more thrilled!
My story is set during Sarah Jane’s later years whilst she lives at 13 Bannerman Road. Clyde Langer is attending open days to study illustration but he and Sarah Jane noticed that this university isn't all what it seems. Who is the mysterious grey haired man and who is his prisoner?

In the future, when the charity anthology is in print, I'd love to show you the process in which some of my inner drawings were created, but for now you'll have to wait in wonder.

Josh Wanisko and his daughter, Lily Wanisko
Kara Dennison
Sophie Iles
